Prison-University Partnership Project

This exciting new project involves a collaboration between the Law School, the Legal Advice Clinic, and the Criminology department, to develop a partnership with HMP Leicester.

 

The project is looking to recruit 2 or 3 student members to this university-led project. You will have the opportunity to apply for security clearance and, if successful, we expect to be able to offer you an opportunity to attend the prison at least once to take part in an educational session on an aspect of the law, run by the project, for a group of prisoners.

LAC & Citizen's Advice Student Placement Programme

The Legal Advice Clinic has teamed up with Citizens Advice Leicester to offer a (minimum) 12 month volunteering experience for law students. Full training will be provided by Citizens Advice and, for students who progress to the second tier of training, qualifying work experience (QWE) may be available. Once trained, students will volunteer for 8 hours a week (over 1 or 2 shifts) as Citizens Advice advisers.

 

This opportunity is for UK students and students who will be based in the UK for the duration of the placement. Students working 100% online will not have access to the Citizens Advice Training Systems.

Insight Project
Position: Project Consultant

'Project consultants’ are non-law students studying subjects relevant to the project.

You will act as a figurehead of expertise in your subject i.e., geography, psychology, criminology, history, medicine, etc.

You would play a fundamental role in promoting Pro Bono, attracting more non-law students across campus, and networking with other Pro Bono members in their subject areas. We hope this will boost our non-law engagement, allowing us to reach more faculties as opposed to being a ‘law student exclusive’ society.

Position: Team Leader

As a Team Leader, you will be in charge of the Team Members assigned to you.

You will need to be proactive and organised so that tasks can be completed on time. Additionally, you will be involved in meetings to discuss the different teams' progress and what the next presentational subject would be.

You will need to be good at dealing with responsibility and organising your team’s meetings, tasks, and admin. You will work closely with the Project Director to ensure your team meets the tasks and targets set.

YOUR ROLE WILL INCLUDE:

 

· Working with other Publicity Officers to create consistent content.

· Engaging in project work.

· Being present at group meetings and all Pro Bono events.

· Being able to troubleshoot publicity matters by bringing them to your Team leader, Pawan, ensuring there is equal communication between all projects.

· Take on admin workload if there is any, which will be delegated by your project specific director.

· Promoting equal opportunities across the Pro Bono Society

Insight Project
Position: Team Member

Within the project, you will be a part of a team where you will collaboratively produce presentations/workshops on particular subjects. You will have the freedom to express and create on certain topics. You will raise awareness of opportunities through educating, motivating, and advertising.

There will be room for independent creations for our social media pages. We are looking for our members personality to really make the project.

Position: Events Coordinator

As Events Coordinator, we would ask you to plan social events for our project. Inclusivity is a huge priority for us at the Insight Project therefore, we want to have social events for the project that are inclusive for all!

You will work with the Director to plan and present project events. You will oversee organising the place, equipment and other such admin work before the event.

Immigration and Asylum
Position: Translator

This role will be available to students who are able to fluently speak/read more than one language. This role will involve acting as a translator for interviews with non-English speaking clients This role is crucial to the success of the interviews with clients, the translator plays an intermediary between both the client and advisor.

We are actively seeking individuals who can fluently speak and/or write French, Kurdish, Farsi, Spanish and Urdu. However, individuals who speak/write other languages are encouraged to apply.

Immigration and Asylum
Position: Social Media Director

The Immigration and Asylum Project aims to support asylum seekers who lack the funds to make an asylum claim. This year, the project is working with the British Red Cross and New Evidence Search Team (NEST), volunteering with their Refugee Services team.

The Research/Academic Coordinator is a work-heavy task which includes editing 8-10 articles for the blog every month, keeping up to date with government legislation and current events, working alongside the Project Director to approve or reject article submissions from students, and assisting on all events to provide written content. The chosen coordinator will have to demonstrate a superior grasp of the English language and a heightened proficiency at conducting research. All proposals formulated for implementing curriculum alterations must be drafted by the Academic coordinators and the task falls to them to find the gaps in the curriculum which need reform.

Position: Internal Officer

The Internal Officer has responsibility over all the correspondence between the group and other projects/departments within the university, this includes interdepartmental communications, holding the university accountable for their policies and statements, and coordinating collaborative projects between our group and others within the school. Atop this, the Internal Officer effectively doubles as our Events Coordinator by organising all special events occurring on campus, organising lectures with guest speakers, and organising the end of year colloquium of our best article submissions.

Position: Publicity Officer

The publicity officer will work closely with our social media/technology officers, as well as the Pro Bono Society’s committee publicity officer Pawan, in order to troubleshoot publicity matters by maintaining equal communications. Some responsibilities include engaging in project work, attending and being present at group meetings, promoting events in creative ways to engage a larger audience for events, promoting the online blog/ sometimes contributing, and our central causes. The promotional officer acts as a public relations position, where the position holder is expected to bring forward new ideas, causes, campaigns, and meticulously plan the steps leading up to events.

Position: Social Media and Technology Officer

The Social Media and Technology Officer is charged with overseeing and managing the social media pages affiliated with the project (Instagram, Facebook). Additionally, the position’s responsibilities include: creating posters and pamphlets for upcoming events, promoting the project and its affiliates, organising virtual events with our Internal officers, answering all queries and correspondence through the social media inboxes, and online advocacy. The applicant must be proficient with technology and able to edit posters in aesthetically pleasing styles, as well as show some skill in video or photo editing for future video presentations that will be created for promotional purposes. Some tasks may involve content creating.

Litigants in Person
Position: Community Legal Companion

Litigants in Person comprises of student volunteers who work within Leicester County Court assisting individuals who have chosen to represent themselves during their case.

 

Community Legal Companions accompany litigants into court proceedings to take notes, fill out court forms, and prepare legal bundles.

This position is open to second, third and final year students, and JD Pathways students
