Co-Presidents Speech
Welcome to the University of Leicester Pro Bono Society. We are delighted and honored to serve as your Co-Presidents for the 2026/27 academic year.
Through this society, we have learned that the true value of a legal education lies not in personal success, but in using it to help others. This principle lies at the heart of everything we hope to achieve through the Pro Bono Society.
The law has a profound impact on people's lives, yet access to legal knowledge and support is not always equal. As law students, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills that can make a genuine difference to others. Pro bono provides us with the chance to put that knowledge into practice and, in doing so, give something back to the community around us.
With 14 student-led projects, our Society offers students a wide range of opportunities to make that difference. From our Legal Advice Clinic and work supporting asylum seekers and those affected by domestic abuse, to our school’s outreach, fundraising initiatives and community projects, our members contribute to causes that extend far beyond the university campus.
This year, we want to build on that work and continue to make the Pro Bono Society a place where students can both give back and grow. We want to create opportunities for our members to develop their confidence, communication and leadership skills, while gaining a deeper understanding of the real-world impact that the law can have.
We also want to ensure that the Society remains inclusive and accessible. Whether you are already passionate about pro bono work or have never been involved before, we hope there will be an opportunity for you to contribute. You do not need to be an expert in the law to make a difference; sometimes, the most valuable thing you can give is simply your time.
Ultimately, we want to build a Society that our members are proud to be part of and, most importantly, one that makes a meaningful and lasting contribution to our local community.
Our motto, manus multae, cor unum, “many hands, one heart”, captures what we believe makes this Society special. The work we do is only possible because of the collective efforts of our members, project directors, volunteers, committee and supporters. Individually, we can make a difference; together, we can make a lasting one.
We look forward to working with you throughout the year, supporting the incredible work of our project teams and seeing what we can achieve together.
