Windrush Compensation Project

The Windrush Compensation Project supports individuals who may have been affected by the Windrush Scandal and wish to seek compensation from the Government through the Windrush Compensation scheme. The main aim of the project is to seek justice for those affected and encourage and support them to pursue the compensation they deserve. For this, we work closely with the University of Leicester’s Legal Advice Clinic in determining the eligibility of potential clients, along with the documentation they would need to put a claim forward. This comes in the form of offering free legal advice under the supervision of our solicitor.

Project volunteers will mainly assist with spreading awareness and gathering potential claimants through organised events. This involves conversing with the public, educating them about the Windrush Compensation Scheme and encouraging them to contact the Clinic for further information. Many clients are often misinformed about their eligibility, so it is important to encourage them to contact the Clinic if they may have a potential claim.

Project caseworkers will work more closely with the claimants in smaller numbers and would help in preparing claims and sourcing necessary documents. The claimants more often than not have very complex and traumatic experiences in dealing with the Home Office. They may also have prior bad legal experiences, which can lead to a deep mistrust of legal advisors and solicitors, so it is important for caseworkers to have patience, understanding, empathy and professionalism when dealing with potential claimants. This helps members develop interpersonal skills, case analysis and evidential reasoning, which can be very beneficial for their future legal careers.
